Microsoft released Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 in July of 2002, providing organizations with a rich, extensible, web content-management platform built on SQL, IIS and the .Net framework. To provide greater value to its customers, Microsoft folded the MCMS product group into the SharePoint team in 2006 and added web content management functionality.

This effectively ended MCMS as a standalone offering and Microsoft announced it would (1) provide an upgrade path to Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 and (2) offer extended support for MCMS until April of 2014. As the end of official product support draws closer, MCMS customers need to evaluate their  migration options to ensure a successful transition to SharePoint.
